1 specimensHistorical Context
Nero's Alexandrian billon tetradrachms belong to the provincial currency of Roman Egypt. Their Greek legends and Egyptian regnal dates distinguish them from his imperial denarii and aurei. Nero is the reigning Augustus; a family portrait on the reverse does not identify a separate reigning issuer.
The series encompasses several distinct design phases. A year-3 issue (56/57 CE) pairs a laureate portrait with Homonoia. Years 10 and 11 include radiate portraits paired with Poppaea. Later issues use an aegis bust and a wider reverse repertoire. These changes permit a dated survey without assuming that portrait changes, alloy changes, and fiscal policy followed a single precisely documented reform schedule.
Obverse: Iconographic Composition
The portrait changes across the series. Year-3 Homonoia tetradrachms show Nero laureate and facing right. Year-11 Poppaea types show a radiate head right; RPC I 5282 distinguishes a stepped hairstyle from the head described under RPC I 5280.
A radiate bust wearing an aegis appears on the year-12 Alexandria type. The year-13 ancestral types instead show a radiate aegis bust facing left. Crown, bust treatment, hairstyle, and direction must therefore be recorded separately for the particular type.
Obverse: Epigraphy and Inscriptions
The inscriptions use Greek titles, with abbreviated forms varying by type. The year-3 Homonoia issue reads ΝΕΡ ΚΛΑΥ ΚΑΙΣ ΣΕΒ ΓΕΡ ΑΥΤΟ: Nero Claudius Caesar Augustus Germanicus, emperor.
On the year-11 Poppaea type, ΝΕΡΩ ΚΛΑΥ ΚΑΙΣ ΣΕΒ ΓΕΡ ΑΥ gives the same titles in a different abbreviation. The year-12 Alexandria type ends its obverse legend at ΓΕΡ and places ΑΥΤΟΚΡΑ, an abbreviation of Autokrator, on the reverse. On the year-13 Tiberius type the obverse also carries L ΙΓ, the date for year 13. A reconstructed full title should be distinguished from the letters actually preserved.
Reverse: Iconographic Composition
Reverse families include seated Homonoia, dynastic portraits, the personification Alexandria, ancestral portraits, a sailing ship, and divine busts. Poppaea is titled Augusta on the year-11 reverse. Alexandria wears an elephant headdress on the year-12 type.
Year-13 ancestral reverses distinguish a radiate Augustus, explicitly called divine, from a laureate Tiberius named Tiberius Caesar. Tiberius's retrospective portrait does not establish deification. The ship inscription refers to carrying Augustus; it does not alone document a particular voyage.
Year-14 types include Zeus Olympios and Poseidon Isthmios. Their named divine identities are firmer evidence than a proposed link between each die and a specific event in Nero's itinerary.
Reverse: Epigraphy and Inscriptions
The year sign conventionally transcribed L accompanies Greek numerals. Examples include L Ι for year 10 (63/64 CE), L ΙΑ for year 11 (64/65 CE), L ΙΒ for year 12 (65/66 CE), L ΙΓ for year 13 (66/67 CE), and L ΙΔ for year 14 (67/68 CE). On the cited year-13 and year-14 types the date is on the obverse.
Selected reverse inscriptions are:
- ΠΟΠΠΑΙΑ ΣΕΒΑΣΤΗ (Poppaia Sebaste): Poppaea Augusta.
- ΑΥΤΟΚΡΑ (Autokra[tor]): emperor, on the Alexandria type.
- ΘΕΟΣ ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΣ (Theos Sebastos): the divine Augustus.
- ΤΙΒΕΡΙΟΣ ΚΑΙΣΑΡ (Tiberios Kaisar): Tiberius Caesar.
- ΣΕΒΑΣΤΟΦΟΡΟΣ (Sebastophoros): carrying Augustus, referring to the ship.
- ΔΙΟΣ ΟΛΥΜΠΙΟΥ (Dios Olympiou): of Olympian Zeus.
- ΠΟΣΕΙΔΩΝ ΙΣΘΜΙΟΣ (Poseidon Isthmios): Isthmian Poseidon.
Typology and Documented Variants
Selected documented types illustrate the series rather than an uninterrupted annual sequence:
- Year 3, 56/57 CE: laureate head right; Homonoia seated left with patera, RPC I 5208.
- Year 10, 63/64 CE: radiate head right; Poppaea bust right, RPC I 5275.
- Year 11, 64/65 CE: radiate head right; Poppaea bust right, RPC I 5280. RPC I 5282 separately specifies Nero's stepped hairstyle and includes Milne 223 among its specimens. These are distinct catalogue types.
- Year 12, 65/66 CE: radiate aegis bust right; Alexandria in elephant headdress, RPC I 5289.
- Year 13, 66/67 CE: radiate aegis bust left; Divus Augustus, Tiberius Caesar, or sailing ship, RPC I 5294, 5295, and 5296 respectively.
- Year 14, 67/68 CE: radiate aegis bust left; Zeus Olympios or Poseidon Isthmios, RPC I 5313 and 5316.
Attribution depends on the combined portrait, legend, date, and reverse. Similar dynastic designs are not interchangeable catalogue identifications.
Scholarly Debates and Attribution Limitations
Catalogue metal labels, legacy analytical notes, and measurements answer different questions. Billon is used here for the silver-bearing alloy; the catalogue label silver does not establish a high-purity composition. Legacy analytical annotations cannot establish the composition of an untested coin or a universal production target.
The checked type records do not establish exact official tariffs, compulsory reminting of every foreign coin, total output, or the fiscal proceeds of a recall. Such arguments require separate monetary and analytical evidence. Neither a dark surface nor a radiate crown measures silver content.
The year-11 Poppaea varieties require attention to Nero's hairstyle. An exact specimen concordance should remain provisional until both faces can be compared with the relevant catalogue specimens. Likewise, Tiberius Caesar must not be silently expanded into Divus Tiberius.
