Historical Context

Probus's Alexandrian billon tetradrachms belong to his reign of 276-282 CE. His initial claim to imperial power was contested by Florianus, so describing him as undisputed sole Augustus from the moment of proclamation would overstate the accession settlement.

The Alexandrian denomination formed part of Egypt's provincial currency. Its Greek imperial titles and Egyptian regnal dates must be treated separately from the Latin legends and mint marks of Probus's imperial radiates. A date in a local calendar is evidence for an issue, not the exact day on which all provincial authorities recognized a ruler.

The documented series extends from year 1 in 276 CE to year 8 in 282 CE. This numbering reflects local regnal practice rather than eight completed years of rule. The types permit a survey across the reign without turning a single Nike reverse into the entire series.

Obverse Iconographic Composition

The documented examples show a laureate and cuirassed bust of Probus facing right, seen from the front. Armour conveys imperial military authority, while the wreath marks the laureate portrait convention of these tetradrachms.

Details such as drapery, shoulder treatment, and the engraving of hair and beard must be checked on each type. The examples cited here do not establish that every die throughout the reign used an identical bust or that all surviving strikes have uniformly high relief or workmanship.

Obverse Epigraphy and Inscriptions

A documented obverse formula is Α Κ Μ ΑΥΡ ΠΡΟΒΟϹ ϹΕΒ. It expands to Autokrator Kaisar Markos Aurelios Probos Sebastos: Emperor Caesar Marcus Aurelius Probus Augustus.

Α and Κ abbreviate imperial titles; Μ ΑΥΡ represents Marcus Aurelius; ΠΡΟΒΟϹ gives Probus's name; ϹΕΒ abbreviates Sebastos, Augustus. Lunate sigma resembles Latin C, so a visual transcription should not be mistaken for a Latin inscription. Letter spacing, omissions, and damaged letters should be recorded at die or specimen level rather than normalized into an asserted universal legend.

Reverse Iconographic Composition

The reverse repertoire includes the eagle, Nike, personifications, and seated divinities. Year-2 examples show Elpis holding a flower and lifting her skirt, Dikaiosyne with scales and cornucopia, Nike with wreath and palm, and eagles in differing orientations.

A year-5 Nike advances right with wreath and palm. A year-4 Athena sits left holding Nike and spear, with a shield below. A related year-6 seated figure is catalogued as Athena or Roma, preserving uncertainty in the divine identification. The year-8 Eirene holds an olive branch and sceptre.

These figures express recognizable themes of victory and welfare. Identifying a motif does not prove that a particular issue celebrated a named campaign or was the most numerous reverse of the reign.

Reverse Epigraphy and Inscriptions

The year sign conventionally written L accompanies Greek numerals. Selected documented dates are L Α, year 1 (276 CE); L Β, year 2 (276/277 CE); L Δ, year 4 (278/279 CE); L Ε, year 5 (279/280 CE); L Ϛ, year 6 (280/281 CE); and L Η, year 8 (282 CE).

Year 5 is not the fifth Julian anniversary after accession. The local calendar explains why the numbered span exceeds the number of elapsed years in Probus's reign. Date placement must be checked on the actual die; an L and a numeral should not automatically be read as workshop letters or assigned a fixed field position.

Typology and Documented Variants

Selected supported types cover multiple phases and reverse families:

  • Year 1, 276 CE: Elpis advancing left, flower and raised skirt, Milne 4516, RPC X type ID 75770. Milne 4516 is not the eagle type assigned that number in the draft.
  • Year 2, 276/277 CE: Elpis, Dikaiosyne, Nike, and eagle reverses are documented.
  • Year 4, 278/279 CE: Athena seated left, holding Nike and spear, shield below, Milne 4571, RPC X type ID 75785.
  • Year 5, 279/280 CE: Nike advancing right with wreath and palm, L Ε, Milne 4600, RPC X type ID 75793.
  • Year 6, 280/281 CE: Athena or Roma seated on a cuirass, holding Nike and spear, Milne 4618, RPC X type ID 75799.
  • Year 8, 282 CE: Eirene standing left with olive branch and sceptre, RPC X type ID 75810.

These RPC X identifiers are unassigned database type IDs. They are not individual coin IDs or final printed catalogue numbers. A verified parallel does not automatically identify every similar specimen.

Scholarly Debates and Attribution Limitations

Billon is a denomination-related alloy description, not a chemical measurement of each coin. The cited records do not establish exact silver percentages, a copper-tin-lead recipe, or a chemical surface wash. Neither appearance nor a catalogue metal label can supply that evidence.

Measurements and axes belong to particular surviving coins or defined samples. They cannot be generalized into a universal standard, a fixed axis rule, or an estimate of total output. A small surviving sample of a terminal year also does not prove how many coins were originally issued.

The precise attribution of a similar year-5 Nike coin still requires specimen comparison. Milne 4600 is a verified parallel; Milne 4601 is not silently substituted as an exact concordance. Claims about workshop organization, universal absence of control marks, relative production volumes, and the mint's receipt of news of Probus's death remain unsupported by these type descriptions.
