Charles II, Gold Five Guineas (Kingdom of England, 1668–1684)
Authorized under the Mint Indenture of 24 December 1663 and first struck for circulation in 1668, the Charles II gold five guineas was England's largest milled coin. Engraved by John Roettiers and milled using Pierre Blondeau's machinery, the denomination featured an inscribed edge safeguard and, on select issues, an elephant provenance hallmark denoting gold imported via the Company of Royal Adventurers of England Trading into Africa.
